Why Northstar Counseling?
Do you feel like you aren't where you want to be in life or don't know how to get to where you want to be? Do you struggle with having the same arguments in different ways with your parents or partner? Do you feel stuck and don't know where to go or what to do next? Do you get nervous or anxious in social settings and want to leave?

We want therapy to be productive and beneficial. We may not be able to change how your parents are, your partner's trauma, or the overwhelming daily tasks at work, but we will work to find new options and opportunities to make positive changes. Growth and change is not an easy thing to achieve alone. We use a relational approach with combination of CBT (modifying negative thoughts and behaviors) with Psychodynamic therapy (exploring the influence of your past on your present) and IFS/Parts Work (understanding internal complexities and conflicts that influence and impact you). Throughout sessions we can dive into your goals, solidify your thoughts and actions, and connect your past, present, and future!
Our therapists provide evidence-based treatment and engage in continuous development through continuing education to expand their knowledge and clinical skills, and stay current with best practices to provide thoughtful, effective, and compassionate care.
What to Expect When Starting Therapy
1
Consultation (Optional)
A 10–15 minute phone consultation to help us match you with a therapist who best fits your needs, goals, and availability. During the call, we'll discuss scheduling, fees, insurance, and what you're looking for in therapy, while answering any questions you may have
2
Initial Session
Your first session is an intake session. During this session, you and your therapist will get to know one another by exploring important aspects of your life, your relationships, your experiences, and what has brought you to therapy. You'll also discuss your goals and what you hope to gain from the therapeutic process.
The purpose of this session is to begin building a strong, trusting relationship with your therapist while developing a personalized treatment plan that reflects your needs and priorities. There is no pressure to share everything at once—we move at a pace that feels comfortable for you.
3
Continuation
Most clients choose to meet weekly, though bi-weekly sessions may be a better fit depending on your needs, goals, and schedule. At Northstar Counseling, we ask that clients attend weekly sessions for the first six appointments to build rapport, establish momentum, and create a strong foundation for the therapeutic process. After these initial sessions, you and your therapist can determine whether transitioning to a bi-weekly schedule is appropriate based on your progress and goals.
